Rice, now a political science professor at Stanford University, played a duet with Franklin on "Say a Little Prayer for You", which Franklin introduced by saying: "You didn't think she could play it, right?"
The unlikely alliance of Rice and Franklin had its origins at a White House meeting between the two, after which Franklin suggested they join to raise money for a worthy cause, said Catherine Cahill, chief executive of Philadelphia's Mann Music Center for the Performing Arts, where the event was held.
"There's nothing political about this performance," Cahill said.
Rice, the Republican former aide to President George W. Bush, performed with the Queen of Soul, a committed Democrat who sang at President Barack Obama's inauguration, to raise money for underprivileged youth.
But the show really belonged to Franklin,Bape, who,Primp, dressed in a white satin gown, ran through classics including "Respect," "Chain of Fools", and "You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman."
The performance was expected to raise $580,000 for an annual program that invites low-income children to attend concerts and master classes at the center.
PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) – Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice abandoned international affairs for a Mozart piano concerto on Tuesday, teaming up with Soul legend Aretha Franklin to perform at a charity concert.
The first black woman to become Secretary of State, who justified the U.S.-led war in Iraq with discredited claims that it harbored weapons of mass destruction, bowed and smiled briefly to the audience after her nine-minute performance.
Rice is an accomplished pianist who considered becoming a professional musician before opting to specialize in studying the former Soviet Union. She was greeted with cheers and a few boos when she appeared to play a movement of Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor with the Philadelphia Orchestra.

Sized quite nicely from a 0 to a 20,Juicy Couture belts, this 100-percent cotton faded jacket is just great. Plus, it’s shrunken in all the right places and super-chic.
How to wear? It would look nice mixed with white, dark denim or red. Plus, it’s a nice switch from a moto jacket or anything edgy and rebellious.
That is, until now. I just adore this $88 Gap denim blazer. It looks so fresh and nicely tailored but also has that vintage look.

It is expected Lohan will serve her time at the all-female Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood, Calif. (where Paris Hilton served 23 days of a 45-day sentence for violating her probation in a DUI case in 2007).
“We love you, Lindsay!” he shouted as she was whisked out of court.

Michael Lohan couldn’t contain himself as he watched 24-year-old daughter Lindsay handcuffed out of Beverly Hills Superior Court Tuesday morning.
On behalf of Michael, his attorney Lisa Bloom addressed the press: “Michael spent the morning praying for his daughter. He doesn’t believe she should be incarcerated. He is devastated she is going to jail and he is ready and able to help her at any time.”

The actress’ mother Dina also was in court but ignored reporters.
Lohan likely won’t spend 90 days behind bars. She could be released early due to overcrowding, but she is expected to serve no less than 23 days. (Still, that is more than the 84 minutes she spent in the slammer in 2006 for drug and alcohol cases filed that year.)
NEW YORK – Dennis Hopper’s posthumous retrospective that opened at Los Angeles’ MOCA last week makes abundantly clear that art played more than a bit part in the actor and director's life. But while Hopper's artwork — in particular, his photographs — is already renowned, the star's lifelong interest in collecting art is not as well known. That will change this November, when Christie’s holds a New York auction of the art that he owned,Dsquared, including several bold and brazen pieces he bought early on as an art-scene insider and self-professed "gallery bum."
"It’s an artist’s collection, it’s not the collection of a banker or mogul," chairman of Christie’s Americas Marc Porter told Bloomberg. "It’s the collection of a creative artist." It is, in fact, a testament to an artist who was deeply embedded in every aspect of the fine-arts world. Just consider: Hopper played art dealer Bruno Bischofberger in "Basquiat," the 1996 movie directed by artist Julian Schnabel and also starring David Bowie as Warhol. Not only did Hopper bring a personal familiarity with the period's art scene to his role, he owned work by all three of the artists involved.
Introduced to art by his "Rebel Without a Cause" co-start James Dean, Hopper was a voracious collector of Pop, folk, and found art throughout the 1960s — according to Vanity Fair he purchased Ed Ruscha?s very first Standard Oil painting, and an Andy Warhol soup can in 1962 for $75 — but he saw his collection broken up over the course of five tumultuous marriages. What remains will be sold off by his estate at Christie’s on November 10 and 11, including Warhol’s 1971 "Portrait of Dennis Hopper," which carries a high estimate of $1.2 million, and an untitled 1987 work by Jean-Michel Basquiat that the artist bought in 1988 for $17,000 to hang in his Frank Gehry-designed Venice Beach home, and which now carries a high estimate of $7 million. The sale is expected to fetch a total of $10 million. (An assortment of prints, lesser works,Moncler, and memorabilia from Hopper's collection will also be included in Christie's January 2011 interiors sale.)

Currently all mainland users are directed to a new landing page on google.cn, a website in China that now has links to the Hong Kong site. Google has said it believes this approach complies with Chinese law.
China employs a vast system of Internet censorship dubbed the "Great Firewall of China" which polices what the world's largest online population can see and do on the Web.
"We are very pleased we got the ICP (Internet Content Provider) annual renewal. We are very pleased we can continue to provide products and services to our users."
The renewal comes after a period of uncertainty over the licence and follows a standoff between the US Internet giant and Beijing over state censorship.
This week, a top Chinese think tank, the China Academy of Social Sciences, said social networking sites like Facebook pose a security threat to China and are used as "tools of subversion" by Western nations including the US.
An official with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the main regulator of China's Internet industry, told AFP earlier this week that Google's application was under consideration.
BEIJING (AFP) – US web giant Google said Friday its licence to operate in China, the world's largest Internet market, has been renewed, ending weeks of tension over Beijing's handling of the issue.
"It was clear we had to end the redirect," the Financial Times quoted Google CEO Eric Schmidt as telling a symposium in the United States on Thursday.
But last week, the company reversed that decision out of concern for the renewal of its licence.
Beijing regularly invokes the need to stamp out pornography as a key reason for the controls but critics contend its primary purpose is to quell political dissent or content seen as threatening to Communist Party rule.
In its annual report on new media, the academy also accused Google of being tied to US government information services and bent on advancing America's global "hegemony".
China has more than 400 million web users, according to official data.
"Governments and the industry should send a very clear message to China that it must provide a business environment for foreign companies that doesn't force them to violate human rights," said Sharon Hom,Nike, executive director of Human Rights in China.
"Google is standing there alone," she said. Others "must step up to the plate and address this as a collective industry Internet challenge. They can't just say it's a Google problem."
Meanwhile, prominent US-based human rights group have urged governments and technology companies to support Google.
In March, Google said it would no longer bow to government censors and effectively shut down its Chinese search engine, re-routing mainland users to its uncensored site in Hong Kong.
"We have got the renewal," Google's Beijing-based spokeswoman Marsha Wang told AFP.
The spat between Google and the Chinese government spilled over into the diplomatic arena, with Washington and Beijing waging a months-long war of words on the issues of Internet freedom and troubles faced by foreign firms in China.
Last month,John Galliano, Google's chief legal officer David Drummond said in a post on the company's blog: "Without an ICP licence, we can't operate a commercial website like google.cn — so Google would effectively go dark in China."
