Swinton, 49, began her career in the 1980s on British television and in movies, and saw her breakout role in 1992's "Orlando." Since then, she has balanced work in European and U.S. independent films with Hollywood roles, such as her Oscar-winning turn as a corporate lawyer in "Michael Clayton."
The British actress said "I Am Love," in which she portrays a Russian woman married into a wealthy family in Milan, was created in her usual practice of dreaming up ideas then fleshing them out with colleagues.
"I conform absolutely to the laws of the love of my friends and family and my own," she said. "I feel very conformist."
There is the imaginative world of making movies that she considers a passionate hobby, not work, including producing her new "I Am Love" for the past 11 years with Italian director Luca Guadagnino. It began playing in U.S. theaters on Friday.
Recchi's choice of a younger man is not far removed from Swinton's own love life, which stirred headlines back in 2008 and still prompts questions today after she split with playwright John Byrne, the father of her twin children.

The Los Angeles Times called Swinton's work in the film,Paul Smith, "a delectable performance."
Recchi bonds with a young chef who is a friend of her son over a shared love of cooking, and she embarks on a passionate affair with the man, pondering all the while whether she can break free of society's conventions.

The 1992 movie is a fantasy in which Swinton portrays a British nobleman who is transfixed on contemplating the nature of love. He lives forever and over the generations switches genders from man to woman to better understand what love is.
"Orlando" reminds Swinton of "I Am Love" because she was told both would never get made. She also took that piece of conventional movie-making wisdom as a fiction and saw the film finally land in theaters to critical acclaim. In fact, "Orlando" is about to be re-released in some U.S. cinemas.
And whether fantasy or reality, the actress considers her life one long "turn of the wheel."
"Life doesn't really feel constitutionally that different. The business of making work slowly and carefully with your friends over many years. It's the same now as it ever was."

Swinton calls those stories the "fantastic fantasies" of tabloid journalism. "It's just some sort of fantasy that people have that it's all going to be 'sturm und drang'," she said, using the German phrase for storm and stress.
NEW YORK (Reuters) – Fantasy is an integral part of actress Tilda Swinton's life, which she both adores and dislikes.
"I am Love" is Swinton's third collaboration with Guadagnino, and she said it reminds her of "Orlando,NFL Jerseys," which was directed by Sally Potter.
She is still friends with Byrne but now dates a much younger artist boyfriend, and for years, media reports have said she is engaged in an open marriage with the two men.

Still playing across the globe in its Harold Prince-directed incarnation, the show "tells the story of a masked figure who lurks beneath the catacombs of the Paris Opera House, exercising a reign of terror over all who inhabit it," according to production notes. "He falls madly in love with an innocent young soprano, Christine, and devotes himself to creating a new star by nurturing her extraordinary talents and by employing all of the devious methods at his command."
Torn was given probation last year in a Connecticut drunken driving case and allowed to enter an alcohol-education program. A Connecticut judge last week dismissed the drunken driving charge against him based on his successful completion of that program.
The actor, whose real name is Elmore Rual Torn, has appeared on Lyle&Scott the television show "30 Rock" and won an Emmy in 1996 for his work on "The Larry Sanders Show." In addition to "Men in Black," his recent movie credits include "The Insider" and "Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story."
Since the arrest, Torn has completed inpatient alcohol rehabilitation and is participating in outpatient treatment. He also has gotten clean urinalysis test results, has gotten rid of all of his weapons and met other conditions proposed by the court, Waterfall said Tuesday.
Waterfall has said Torn remembers nothing of that night.
Torn, who played Chief Zed in the 1997 film "Men in Black," was arrested Jan. 29 after he broke into a Litchfield Bancorp branch near his home in Salisbury, according to Lyle&Scott court records. Police say he thought he was home, taking off his hat and boots and leaving them by the door.
He is scheduled to return June 4, at which time Waterfall said they expect to have made "very serious progress toward a resolution" to the criminal case.
Torn, 79, appeared briefly Tuesday in Litchfield Superior Court, where Lyle&Scott he has pleaded not guilty to trespassing, carrying a weapon while intoxicated, carrying a weapon without a permit, burglary and criminal mischief.
Torn did not speak during his court appearance, but smiled and gave a thumbs-up gesture to onlookers as he entered the courthouse with his son, Tony.
He also has two previous drunken driving arrests in New York.
Officers found a loaded .22-caliber revolver in Torn’s pocket, and a breath test showed his blood-alcohol content was 0.203 — about 2 1/2 times the legal limit for drivers in Connecticut, the court records say.
LITCHFIELD, Conn. – An attorney for Rip Torn said he has been talking with prosecutors about keeping the Emmy-winning actor out of prison as they try to resolve criminal charges that he broke into a bank while drunk and armed.
His attorney, A. Thomas Waterfall, said they hope Torn can apply for accelerated rehabilitation, a form of probation in which first-time offenders can have their record cleared if they meet certain court-ordered requirements. Avoiding prison time is "absolutely" their goal, either through the accelerated rehabilitation program or some other kind of plea agreement, Waterfall said.
"I don’t believe that jail is anything that would be of any use to Mr. Torn (or) to the citizens of the state of Connecticut. I just don’t see that as being a reasonable resolution to this case," Waterfall said.
"He is also continuing with Alcoholics Anonymous and that’s going very well," Waterfall said. "He looks better and better each time you see him."
Torn didn’t brandish the weapon when the officers confronted him, according to his attorney and the court records, and has no history of violence. His permit to carry a firearm in Connecticut had expired in October 2007.
Waterfall acknowledged that the weapons charge could complicate Torn’s application for accelerated rehabilitation, which typically is an option only for nonviolent offenders.
Revenue reached $5.57 billion in the quarter. That’s up from $5.19 billion in the last year’s first quarter. Revenue at stores open at least a year rose 5.5 percent. The measure is a key indicator of a retailer’s health because it excludes the effects of expansion.
Macy’s Inc., based in Cincinnati, said Wednesday that it True Religion posted net income of $23 million, or 5 cents per share, for the period ending May 1. That compares with a loss of $88 million, or 21 cents per share, in the year-ago period.
Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters still expect more — $1.87 per share.

Hoguet also noted that the company is seeing customers return but declined to specify which rivals Macy’s was taking business from.
Hoguet said that aside from its flagship store in New York, its smallest-volume stores — those in small markets or small in size — enjoyed the biggest sales increases, confirming that its plans to tailor its merchandise to local markets is working. In the past, those stores’ business was overlooked and was the toughest to re-ignite, she noted.
"We are off to a great start this year, and we have Ed hardy bags every expectation that it will continue," Karen Hoguet, Macy’s chief financial officer, told investors during a conference call.
"With major changes now behind us, the Macy’s organization has settled in and is hitting a stride in capitalizing on the advantages of (localization)," said Terry J. Lundgren, Macy’s chairman, president and CEO, said in a statement.
Bloomingdale’s plans to open a new, smaller store this fall in Santa Monica, Calif., and to launch a Bloomingdale’s outlet with four locations this fall. Such efforts follow Bloomingdale’s opening its first international location in Dubai during the first quarter.
The United States has sought to revive the peace process, calling the conflict a "vital national security interest."
But many doubt whether the latest U.S. effort can Coogi succeed where years of diplomacy have failed. Indirect talks are a far cry from the face-to-face negotiations of the past.
Mitchell proposed the indirect format as a way to break an impasse over Jewish settlement construction on Israeli-occupied land where the Palestinians aim to establish a state alongside Israel.
Erekat said Mitchell would make a statement on Sunday including details on when the talks would start. Mitchell is due to meet Abbas again on Sunday before departing, he added.
"We believe the time is not for negotiations but decisions," he said, adding that an initial four months of indirect talks would focus on the issues of the borders of a future Palestinian state and security.
Netanyahu welcomed the resumption of peace talks.
"Israel’s position was and remains that the talks ought to be conducted without preconditions and should quickly lead to direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians," a statement from Netanyahu’s office said.
Under U.S. pressure, Netanyahu announced in November a 10-month settlement building freeze in the West Bank, but it was not enough to draw Abbas back to negotiations.

Israeli leaders have said the Palestinians can raise core issues in the indirect talks, but only direct negotiations can resolve them.
There have been no negotiations since December, 2008, when Israel launched an offensive in Gaza.
