Veering wildly from dark psychological drama to raucous comedy and culminating in an ending that contains possibly magical elements — scholars still are debating — this late "problem play" has defied the best efforts of many a talented director.

Still, there's nothing particularly distinctive about the production, from its staging of the immortal stage direction, "Exit,American eagle, pursued by a bear" — conveyed via shadow puppetry and ominous sound effects — to its handling of the climactic scene in which a statue of Hermione miraculously comes to life. The performances, including Santiago-Hudson's beautifully spoken Leontes, Emond's elegant and dignified Hermione and particularly Jean-Baptiste's deeply moving Paulina, are all fine, and the design elements are impeccable.

This is merely a good,Christian Audigier, not great, "Winter's Tale," and it particularly suffers by comparison to the terrific Bridge Project production directed by Sam Mendes that was seen not too long ago at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

The complicated plot is set in motion by King Leontes (Ruben Santiago-Hudson) suspecting his wife, Hermione (Linda Emond), of having an affair with the visiting King Polixenes (Jesse L. Martin). Despite the desperate pleas of her friend Paulina (Marianne Jean-Baptiste), Leontes' paranoia results in the apparent death of his wife and the banishment of his infant daughter.

Michael Grief, who has dealt with some pretty difficult contemporary material during recent years — "Next to Normal," "Grey Gardens" — rises to the task fairly well in this Central Park mounting. Although it lacks the revelatory aspects of "The Merchant of Venice," starring Al Pacino, with which it is running in repertory, this is a generally satisfying rendition that benefits immeasurably from the idyllic outdoor atmosphere of its presentation.

The play's second half takes place years later in Bohemia, where the now-grown daughter, Perdita (Heather Lind), having been raised by an old shepherd (Max Wright), falls in love with Polixenes' son, Florizel (Francois Battiste).

NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) – Perhaps the biggest challenge in staging William Shakespeare's "The Winter's Tale" simply is making it coherent.

The tone shifts wildly between the play's two parts, with much of Act 2 dominated by the comic shenanigans of a thievish rogue (Hamish Linklater) and the shepherd's hapless son (Jesse Tyler Ferguson).

The production touches all of the bases dutifully. The somber atmosphere of Act 1 is enhanced by Mark Wendland's stark set design dominated by small funereal pyres and by the haunting music by Tom Kitt ("Next to Normal") played by an onstage ensemble. The raucously vulgar humor of Act 2 benefits from the comic talents of Linklater and Ferguson, who clearly are having a fine time. (Lest you think that the Shakespeare Festival is pandering with its employment of these stars of the sitcoms "The New Adventures of Old Christine" and "Modern Family," be advised that both are longtime New York theater veterans).

Some homeowners are doing just that. Applications to refinance surged this week to the highest level in seven months, the Mortgage Bankers Association said.

Anxiety over the European crisis has caused global investors to snap up Treasury bonds, which they view as much safer than other investments. Treasury yields have fallen as a result, taking mortgage rates down, too.

As cheap as mortgages are these days, the number of loans Diesel being taken out to buy homes remains at its lowest point in more than 13 years. One reason is that a special tax credit for homebuyers expired last month. Many people had rushed to sign contracts by then.

The premium that borrowers pay to take out "jumbo" loans for more expensive homes has dropped by a full percentage point since late 2008, to just 0.8 percent, for instance.

When the crisis eases, and especially if the American economy recovery stays on track, expect investors to move out of bonds and back into stocks. That would make mortgages more expensive.

"They’re really looking with a magnifying glass," said Steve Mevorah, a loan officer with Icon Mortgage Inc. in Las Vegas. "They’re trying to make sure that they are flawless loans."

Investors "are very comfortable with the guarantee that is in place," notes Credit Suisse mortgage strategist Mahesh Swaminathan. "That, for all practical Diesel purposes, is very strong government support."

Since the financial crisis ended, mortgages of all types have become more affordable — from the 30-year fixed to adjustable varieties.

Analysts had expected mortgage rates to rise when the government ended a program designed to bolster the housing market. Instead, they fell because of fears that Greece would default on its debt.

"If the economy finally really shows sustained improvement, rates are definitely going to go up," said Fred Chamberlin, a consultant with Alpine Mortgage Planning in Eugene, Ore.

Another obstacle: trouble qualifying for a mortgage. Borrowers need solid credit and a down payment of at least 3.5 percent. Banks tightened lending standards after millions of borrowers fell into default and foreclosure during the housing bust.

He suggests that homeowners looking to refinance move fast and not hold out for even lower rates. "If you want the bottom, the only way you’re going to know it is when you’ve missed it," Chamberlin said.

For now, though, rates are tantalizingly low. The average 30-year fixed-rate loan sank to 4.78 percent this week, the lowest this year and barely above the record of 4.71 percent set in Diesel December. And 15-year loans are at their lowest rates in two decades.

"Strike now," suggested Greg McBride, senior financial analyst at Bankrate.com.

Also keeping rates low is the government’s decision last year to provide unlimited support through 2012 for Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, which buy mortgages and package them into securities and help keep rates low.

WASHINGTON – Turmoil in the stock market and the European debt crisis are making life easier for American homebuyers and families looking to refinance: Mortgage rates Diesel are inching closer to a record low.

Refinancing isn’t right for everyone who qualifies. It typically costs several thousand dollars in fees. Experts suggest calculating how long it will take to recover those fees with the lower loan rate.

The window of opportunity may close soon. Home loan rates will rise if investors grow more confident and shift money out of the safety of government bonds, which influence mortgage rates.

"Rich kids, poor kids, ‘A’ students, ‘C’ students — we really didn’t find any lasting impact on not getting the degree," he said.

At Rock Bridge High School, one of Columbia’s two high schools, 72 percent of the class of 2008 moved on to four-year colleges, with another 10 percent attending community college. That college attendance rate is consistent with national statistics.

The notion that a four-year degree is essential for real success is being challenged by a growing number of economists, policy analysts and academics. They say more Americans should consider other options such as technical training or two-year schools, which have been embraced in Europe for decades.

Vedder’s work also yielded something surprising: The more money states spend on higher education, the less the economy grows — the reverse of long-held assumptions.

"It’s sad to know she’s going to miss that mind-opening effect of an undergraduate degree," Popkes said. "To discover new ideas, to become more worldly."

"It is crucial to the success of our country and to us as individuals to graduate more students from college," she said at a National Press Club forum earlier this year. "We Americans greatly believe that education is the great equalizer."

"If people want to go out and get a master’s degree in history and then cut down trees for a living, that’s fine," he said, citing an example from a recent encounter with a worker. "But I don’t think the public should be subsidizing it."

For many, the dream of earning a college degree — and the social acceptance that comes with that accomplishment — trumps a more analytical, cost-benefits approach.

She has a 3.5 grade-point-average, a college savings account and a family tree teeming with advanced degrees. But in June, Hodges is headed to the Tulsa Welding School in Oklahoma, where she hopes to earn an associate’s degree in welding technology in seven months.

President Barack Obama wants to restore the country’s status as the world leader in the proportion of citizens with college degrees. The U.S. now ranks 10th among industrial nations, behind Canada, Japan, Korea and several European countries.

As evidence, experts cite rising student True Religion debt, stagnant graduation rates and a struggling job market flooded with overqualified degree-holders. They pose a fundamental question: Do too many students go to college?

"They fought me so hard," she said, referring to disappointed family members. "They still think I’m going to college."

John Reynolds, a Florida State sociology professor, True Religion found that unrealized educational expectations do not lead to depression or other long-term emotional costs.

Roughly 1,200 students from central Missouri take classes at the career center, supplementing their core high school courses with specialized training in automotive technology, culinary arts, animal science, robotics, landscape design, electrical wiring and more.

Sue Popkes doesn’t hide her disappointment over her younger daughter’s decision. At the same time, she realizes that Hodges may achieve more financial security than a college degree could ever provide.

And while the unemployment rate for college graduates still trails the rate for high school graduates (4.9 percent versus 10.8 percent), the figure has more True Religion than doubled in less than two years.

Only 4 percent of Rock Bridge students chose technical training like the Oklahoma welding school where Hodges is headed.

Hodges has been set on a welding career since she was 13. She craves independence and has little patience for fellow students who seem to wind up in college more from a sense of obligation than anything else.

"School is what they’ve been doing their whole lives," she said. "So they just want to continue. Because that’s what they are used to."

But federal statistics show that just 36 percent of full-time students starting college in 2001 earned a four-year degree within that allotted time. Even with an extra two years to finish, that group’s graduation rate increased only to 57 percent.

"A four-year degree in business — what’s that get you?" asked Karl Christopher, a placement counselor at the Columbia Area Career Center vocational program. "A shift supervisor position at a store in the mall."

COLUMBIA, Mo. – In a town dominated by the University of Missouri’s flagship campus and two smaller colleges, higher education is practically a True Religion birthright for high school seniors like Kate Hodges.

Margaret Spellings, former federal education secretary under George W. Bush, remains a strong proponent of increased college access. She points to research showing that college graduates will on average earn $1 million more over a lifetime than those with only high school degrees.

"Our national system is, ‘Do you have a degree or not?’" he said. "That doesn’t really measure if you have skills."

Scaglione suggested that nothing short of a new definition for educational success is needed to diminish the public bias toward four-year degrees. He advocates "certification as the new education currency — documentation of skills as opposed to mastering curriculum."

Spending more time in school also means greater overall student debt. The average student debt load in 2008 was $23,200 — a nearly $5,000 increase over five years. Two-thirds of students graduating from four-year schools owe money on student loans.

Ohio University economics professor Richard Vedder blames the cultural notion of "credential inflation" for the stream of unqualified students into four-year colleges. His research has found that the number of new jobs requiring college degrees is less than number of college graduates.

"College is what every parent wants for their child," said Martin Scaglione, president and chief operating officer of work force development for ACT, the Iowa-based not-for-profit best known for its college entrance exam. "The reality is, they may not be ready for college."

Eastwood said he took his backpack, cigarettes, $23 cash and his dad’s rifle, cheap abercrombie, then bought ammunition at a sporting goods store, Gove said. After stopping at a McDonald’s for some chicken sandwiches, he entered the school, said he had attended it in 1991 or 1992, and asked if he could tour it.

Eastwood is set to be arraigned June 14. He faces two counts each of attempted murder after deliberation, attempted murder with extreme indifference, assault with a weapon, assault with extreme indifference and child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury.

Sheriff’s deputy Frederick Lang said Eastwood was Coach speaking with "a poor attempt" at a European accent, smelled of stale alcohol, looked like a transient and talked about his rights as Lang tried to arrest him.

Gove’s testimony offered the most detailed Coach public glimpse so far of what allegedly led up to the shootings Feb. 23 outside Deer Creek Middle School in south suburban Denver, not far from Columbine High School.

He also faces four counts of crime of violence and one count of unlawful possession of a weapon on school grounds.

Public defender Thea Reiff said after the hearing that defense attorneys are investigating what role psychosis and mental illness played in the case.

During the more than four-hour hearing Wednesday, Eastwood listened to testimony, sometimes stretching, writing on a pad, peering at Reiff’s computer, and turning to look around the courtroom.

He told investigators he approached a group of students and said, "Do you like going to this school," before shooting Reagan Webber in the arm, Gove said. He then aimed at a boy who was running away, Gove said. Matt Thieu suffered a chest wound the size of a saucer plate, a sheriff’s deputy testified. Three of his ribs were exposed, and he had a collapsed lung and a couple of broken ribs, emergency room doctor Kevin Merrell testified.

GOLDEN, Colo. – A man accused of shooting and wounding two Colorado eighth-graders just after the school day ended said he woke up feeling angry,Coach and "transformed upon" before he went to their middle school, an investigator testified at a preliminary hearing Wednesday.

Jefferson County Judge Thomas Vance found probable cause Wednesday to proceed with 15 counts including attempted first-degree murder against Eastwood. He is being held with bail set at $1 million and hasn’t entered a plea.

He also mentioned he had been hospitalized after reporting hearing voices from a television-rating box and that he had felt he was losing control over his life due to "forces taking over his psyche," Gove testified.

Teachers tackled and restrained Eastwood until deputies arrived.

He was told he would have to wait until students left. He waited in his car and watched a sheriff’s deputy who is assigned to the school drive away to another call, sheriff’s investigators testified.

Bruco Strong Eagle Eastwood, 32, allegedly told investigators that his main concern was "accuracy" as he aimed a hunting rifle at students outside the school, sheriff’s investigator Richard Gove testified.

Eastwood told investigators he was poor, hadn’t fit in with classmates when he attended Deer Creek, and was subject to bullying and harassment, Gove said.

Though his journal included early morning entries that day, Eastwood told investigators he woke up around 11:30 a.m. and decided to drive to the school, about 55 miles southwest of his father’s house in Hudson, where he was living, Gove said.
